January Herb of The Month: Honeysuckle

"The fragrance of flowers spreads only in the direction of the wind. But the goodness of a person spreads in all directions." -Chanakya

You know what they say! Some of the best things are hidden in plain sight. The things that we seek out the most are usually right under our nose. When it comes to improving our health in natural ways, being more mindful of that fact makes all the difference in the world.

For January, the herb of the month was one that you are more familiar with than you may realize!

When summer rolls around, the wild flowers in your area start to blossom, revealing their intoxicating scents. Taking a nice walk not only improves your well-being, but stopping to smell the flowers goes beyond its figurative connation. As a kid (and even now), you may remember seeing and smelling the familiar flower that seems to grow wherever it seems fit. Depending on where you live, you may even remember picking a few of its flowers off and enjoying its honey-like essence inside. Do you remember the joy you felt when indulging in this flower?

What you may not know is that Honeysuckle has a ton of benefits that add on to the experience that you may already have with it. If you suffer from inflammation caused from muscle ailments like arthritis, tendonitis and even skin inflammations, you definitely want to have this herb as a staple in your home.

Inflammation is caused by excessive heat that generates in your body depending on your diet, stress levels and emotions. You’d be surprised how your thoughts, environment and life changes can translate in the body. All the more reason to start tuning more into yourself, literally!

The calming effect that this herb has on you also benefits other parts of your body as well. Not only does it help reduce inflammation, it doubles with building up your immune system to tackle the inflamed cells. Without the immune system being strengthened, the inflamed cells can't receive the nutrients needed to function properly.

How Do I Prepare?

You’re probably wondering what the best way of adding this herb to your diet consists of. Now, it’s not as simple as downing a supplement pill every morning, but I can assure you it’s worth it. If you have a good-sized mason jar and have already ordered some dried honeysuckle, all you have to do is add a 1-2 tablespoons and pour boiling water to the very top before closing the lid. To get the highest medicinal benefit, allow the Honeysuckle infusion to steep for up to 2 hours. For higher benefit, put it in your windowsill so that this summery flower can be even more solar-powered!

Honeysuckle is one of the main herbs in our upcoming inflammatory herbal blend that will be released really soon!
